Seeing the Light

Instead of just leaving our tiny house as a plywood pentagon, we decided we needed some portals to the world – those windows that have been hanging out in our barn since last spring.

But first, with us spending more and more time going into the house, Eli was so kind as to make that climb easier. Another surprise when I came home from work was a set of entry stairs!

It’s now much easier to enter the Hygge Hale

So now, with easier access to the house interior, we got down to business on the window installation. We decided to start with the bay window as those windows are some of our smallest. We’ve also really been anticipating how the bay window will look upon completion!

Octagon windows up next!  Being a unique shape, we had to think a bit more about the proper install.

Then, it was on to the bathroom windows.  I might have gotten a bit carried away with the number of windows in the bathroom – three! – for a room that’s only about five feet by seven feet.  This is one of those areas where we might have done things a bit differently if we did it all again.  I think two windows in the bathroom would have been a more ideal use of space.  But, the three windows were not without thought.  Here’s how the thinking brought this about: I love a window in the shower, so that was a must (in my opinion!), and we wanted ventilation and light along the back of the house, so another window there to keep the air and brightness flowing through the bathroom door, and the third one, well, it’s always good to have good ventilation by the tiolet… 😉  so, another window above the tiolet!  Even if we had stuck with the three, I think two of them could have been smaller at least…   Such is life, we learn as we go!

Shower window installed!

Next was the living room window, then the kitchen windows.  These are our big ones!  It’s all relative, though – none of our windows are large in the context of a traditionally sized house!

Overall, we really wanted to keep the tiny house from feeling as un-claustrophobic and un-hall-like as possible, so we wanted light, light, light and lots of views to the outside world.  So, the windows continue!  We’ll have four awning windows near the roof of our “cathedral ceiling” ( 🙂 ) in our living room, and four identical windows will keep our loft feeling open and airy.

And, those are our last windows!  It feels amazing to have all our windows installed.  The total – depending on how you count the bay window – comes to either 19 (if you count the bay window as three separate windows) or 17 (if you count the bay window as one window unit).  We’ll definitely be seeing the light!!
