Now we’re back to continuing on the shingles and trim – since I’ve already talked about these two things in a previous post, we’ll just get straight to pictures.
Giving us a break from the shingling (what a great word), we went back to trim as we had to get the front octagon window and the bay window trimmed before we could put up the shingles on this wall. I really liked seeing the bay window get trimmed as I really like the aesthetic of bay windows.
Then, it was back to the shingles again. For anyone who’s installed cedar shingles as siding on a full-sized house – holy hell. I’m in awe. It is ALOT OF WORK. Particularly, when you have to cut the shingles to the exact shape of the spot you’re putting them – like over a bay window roof and next to an octagon window. The shingles that went into those spots were doozies to cut. And, we were having trouble with them breaking because they had to go over the bay window roofing flashing, meaning where we were installing them wasn’t consistently flat. And, those spots required a wide shingle for more solid installation, of which we only had a few… AND, there was just one left that would fit that spot… …I… yeah, I f*%$ed it up. You know when you’re thinking about things too much ’cause it really matters. Sigh. I made a cut that ruined the whole thing. Yeah, I didn’t get photos during this part of the build because frustrations were high. I had to take a break. While Eli continued to puzzle out finishing those tough spot shingles, I started on a new project: installing the shiplap siding on the lower portion of the house.
In the meantime, Eli – a champ as always – was able to get those trouble shingles cut and securely installed. He continued around to the final front side of the house. We were getting close to finished shingle installation!
As we neared the end of the shingle installation, we started to sweat whether or not we had enough shingles to finish up. We didn’t want to have to buy another entire box of shingles just because we had a three-foot section of wall that still needed them. So, we started getting good at finessing every last shingle and searching for the perfect size instead of cutting them to size. It worked! We finished up with only six – six! – shingles left!
Shingles, done! Man, do we think it looks good. I can’t wait for all the siding to be on and the exterior to be finished. I think it’s going to look great!
Quite the construction spot we have! 🙂
