Cause everything deserves a second chance at life, clean those baggies! And, those produce bags!
We’re actually trying to move to cloth zippered bags and produce bags, but plastic bags continue to find their ways to us (are they like cats and can sense when someone doesn’t like them??), and we always go for re-use before jumping to recycling. Sometimes the larger produce bags do get re-purposed as trash can liner bags or kitty litter clean up bags — since our move to California over a year ago, we have yet to need to buy trash bags!
My little bro majored in packaging science. He studied lots of materials and their properties. He caught me reusing a plastic cup intended for cold beverages as a “to-go” cup for my hot soup. It was time for me to be educated. Because the plastic is only made to be used once for a cold beverage, using it other than intended will cause the plastic to break down or slough off, however imperceptibly, for my consumption. While I hate plastics and have a tendency to reuse and recycle them fanatically, I don’t think filling my body with them is the best way to save the planet. Now, I look up my plastics before reuse to make sure that reusing them isn’t going to hurt me. There are some cool reusable plastic alternative zippered food baggies out in the world.
I agree! Some products- and particularly plastics – can be harmful. That can be true even on the first use, let alone with continued use. Particularly if you use something for a purpose for which it wasn’t intended.
Specifically with plastic baggies, I’ve heard a few reuses is unproblematic, but once they begin to look and feel rough, they are sloughing off plastic bits and chemicals into whatever you’re storing in them. The decision just how long to use them is a personal decision with trade offs. Personally, I try to use glass containers as much as possible, as well as cloth.
This is another reason I am such a strong advocate for moving away from single use items! I want both myself and my home environment to be healthy!
Thanks for elaborating and bringing this up, Cynthia!
