After all that roof prep work, we’re finally putting the roofing metal itself on.  Since our tiny house has a tiny roof (who’d have thought!), first step was to cut the sheets of the metal roofing down to size.  Eli made short work of that.  Metal roofing installation requires some bending of sections of the sheets to keep things watertight.  To do this, instead of buying the normal specialized tool for this we’d only use once, Eli crafted a home-made metal bending tool from a chunk of 2×6 — it worked smashingly!  That guy’s a champ.

Unfortunately, the conditions took a turn for the worse when wild fires ripped through northern California and turned the air into a health hazard smoky haze.  We had to don N95 masks to save our lungs while tenaciously continuing on.

With the first side of the roof completed, before we could put the roofing metal sheets down on the second side, we had to tackle the roof window…  As anyone who’s either done the installation of a roof window or skylight or just had one on their roof, it’s no easy task to keep these guys from leaking.  We tried to be meticulous with our process — fingers crossed!

Not wanting to spend too much time in the poor air quality, we kept this day short, but were back at it again the next day.

Then, it was smooth moves after we finished the roof window to get the rest of the roofing metal on.  Getting the roof window up on the roof and in place on it’s completed framing was a feat with it being a beast of a window, but with a little nerve-wracking improv and balancing skills, it was up and on.  We’re super excited about having that window fully installed!

Now, we just need to finish up the ridge cap, and the roof will be complete.  Stay tuned! ….

  1. Hope you have much better luck then I did on the shed roof!!!

A friend up here had me buy “Through the Roof” sealer. It works fantastic! If you ever have a leak. I used it at the cottage and was amazed. Just an idea if you need something. You would have to research it for your roof. It is clear and made by Sashco.

I Love the squirrel peaking out the roof. She is a cutie.

Eli is a master technician coming up with the bending tool for the roof. Is there anything he can’t do?

    Love,
    Dad

    1. We’re definitely keeping our fingers crossed. Thanks for the heads up on the sealer should we have any problems! We’ll definitely keep it in mind!
