A decision made… and another one… and again… and again……. and AGAIN. Because this is a tiny house, every decision we make very obviously affects a number of other elements of the house. Want to move the loft floor down an inch to provide more headroom in the loft? Well, then will the fridge and the water heater below it still fit? Shoot, now the shelf in the kitchen will no longer fit a quart-size ball jar. And, the bookshelf in the living area that runs the length of the wall below the high windows no longer is in line with the loft, but it can’t go any lower because the door is there. And, the cabinet above the bar will need to be shrunk an inch so it’s not in our line-of-sight from the kitchen to the living area, but that means it might not fit all our bowls… The joy and the bane of a tiny house: it’s like Tetris to make sure every inch of space isn’t wasted. Luckily, Eli and I are good at life-size Tetris! You should have seen our U-Box when we moved from Hawai`i or our storage unit when doing field work for a summer.
The main decisions we’re making right now are where to run the gas lines and the water lines. Decisions that need to be made before we finish the subfloor in-case a line needs to be run in it. And, figuring out the lay of the lines requires decisions on water heater, sinks, shower, and stove placement. And, also windows. And, where those things go require knowing where EVERYTHING else is going so it all fits together! And, it’s not going to be easy to alter things once other things are in place… The cons of building in miniature!
This emphasizes the importance of the to-scale 3-D model I created in the software Sketchup.
So, as is the case with many things, although there’s no visual progress – which is a bit disheartening to us 🙁 – important forward headway is being made!
We did have materials delivered! (Just making the list of materials to order required a less-than-motivating number of decisions). So at least something to show for the weeks that have passed!
Arkay! Cats are so helpful when working on the laptop 🙂
They do make computer work much more enjoyable (and furrier), if not perhaps as easy… 😉
